two gardens measurements

Question

Leo's garden, which is 6 m wide, has the same area as Jen's garden, which is 8 m wide. Find the lengths of the two rectangular gardens if Leo's garden is 3 m longer than Jen's garden.

Answer 1

Area = length x width

 

A = L * w

 

Jen:    A = L * 8 = 8L

 

Leo: A = (L+3) * 6  = 6L + 18

 

The areas are the same:

 

 8L = 6L + 18

 

 2L = 18 <-- subtracts 6L from both sides

 

 L = 9

 

 Jenn's garden is 9 x 8 = 72 square meters

 

 Leo's garden is 12 x 6 = 72 square meters
