Solve the equation 5x + y = -3.
y = -5x - 3 Since this equation is now in slope-intercept form, you know the slope of the line is -5. Since parallel lines have equal slopes, the equation of the new line will also be -5.
You now have am point (4,5) and a slope, -5. So, use the Point-Slope form of the equation of a line.
y - y1 = m(x - x1)
y - 5 = -5(x - 4)
y - 5 = -5x + 20
y = -5x + 25 or 5x + y = 25
