asked 10/02/17Word math problem
A copper wire was 240 meters long after 60 meters was cut off it was double the length of a steel wire. How much longer was the copper wire than the steel wire at first.
My attempt to answer is 240-60= 180
That means 180 is double the length of the steel wire
Then i subtracted 240-180=60
My answer is 120 (60 + 60= 120)h

Call the initial length of the copper wire C1. C1=240m.
Cutting 60m. off gives 240m -60m = 180m. Let's call this C2.
Call the length of the steel wire S.
So C2= 180m=2S.
Divide both sides by 2 to get 90m=S.
Divide both sides by 2 to get 90m=S.
Since C1=240m, Subtract S from C1: 240m.-90m.=150m.
I think the copper wire was 150 meters longer than the steel wire at first.
