As a side note, thought, I think it is worth mentioning that Byzantine culture considered itself to be Roman in identity. Early Byzantine culture evolved from Roman culture rather than simply influenced by it. Therefore, saying that the Byzantines "adopted" an already existent Roman practice should come with an asterisk because it was in their culture already. What the Byzantines actually adopted is Christianity, so they started applying many of their Roman practices in a new religious context.
