A floor of a room is in the shape of square. It is to be covered with rectangular tiles that each have an area of 192 square inches.

If the length of the floor is 14 feet, how many tiles are needed to cover the floor?

Find the total area of the floor.

 

A = (14 ft)² = [(14 ft)(12 in/ft)]² = 28224 in²

 

Divide the total area of the floor by the area of one tile.  That gives you the number of tiles that you need.

 

(28224 in²) / (192 in²) = 147

 

You need 147 tiles.
