jack was offered a summer job with a cycle dealer for 7 weeks. he was to have earned $940 plus a new bicycle. buy jack didn't enjoy the job, so he quit after 4 weeks. The owner gave him $400 and the new bike. how much was the bike worth

How much was the new bike WORTH...do you want retail or wholesale price?

That is, a bike could cost $270 for the store owner to purchase, but he might list its price (for retail sale) at $395.

 

That is picking nits.  Let's do Algebra, assuming w = $ earned per week, b = value of bicycle.

7w + b = 940

4w + b = 400

By subtracting, 3w = 540 so w = 540/3 = 180

Now b = 400 - (4/3)180 gives you the value of the bicycle. It comes out negative!

 

The problem appears to be even worse than I thought.
