Based on the wording of the problem, and the numbers provided in the problem, the weight loss per month has to be 64.4/7.5 lbs/month. There is no other possible answer, with this information. Perhaps since it is a loss of weight, they want the rate expressed as a negative number. To say the bear lost weight at a rate of 8.6 lbs/month is the same as saying his weight changed at a rate of -8.6 lbs/month. Try -8.6 lbs/month and post a comment to let me know.
