This is the basic idea of Cartesian coordinates--locating a point in a plane by an x coordinate and a y coordinate.
Starting from the Origin, you can get to any point by traveling left (-) or right (+) some number of units (horizontal distance) and then travel up (+) or down (-) some other vertical distance, and you'll be at any desired point, by suitable directed distances.
