If no extra ingredient (such as water) is added, you just have to add up

3 qt +1 pt + 3 pt + 1 pt = 5 pints + 3 quarts.

 

Now, the question is--how many pints make 1 quart?  is it two?  if so, you get 4 qt + 1 pint.
