This is in conformance to the Common Core NONSENSE. There was never anything wrong with memorizing sums of numbers, the 'times' table, and regular columnar addition.

Kenneth,
 
I saw a video where they presented examples of Common Core math homework.  The assignment told the students to find 5x4 by drawing a picture of 5 cows and then counting the number of legs.  It is hideous that math education is being dumbed down like that.  As a math tutor, you must have seen countless more examples of this.
