3^x+x^2 = 5

If you meant 3^x (see Carol's comment), you cannot solve this algebraically.  You would have to employ graphical or numerical methods (e.g. Newton's iterative method).  But if you meant 3x, then set up a quadratic equation in standard form and solve using the quadratic formula.
