In a certian year, solar and wind energy generation totaled 1015 trillion BTUs. Wind generated 52 trillion btus eight times that generated by solar energy. How much was generated by each source?

If wind is 52 more than 8 times solar, then:
solar = s; wind = w; s + w = total
wind = 8s + 52
total = s + 8s + 52 = 1015
simplify....
s + 8s = 9s
9s + 52 (- 52) = 1015 (- 52)
9s = 963
s = 107
w = 8(107) + 52
w = 908
so....
s + w = 107 + 908 = 1015
Did you mean 52 trillion more than 8 times that generated by solar energy?

Okay
Let x = solar energy
Let 8x + 52 = wind energy
x + 8x + 52 = 1015
9x + 52 = 1015 subtract 52 from both sides
9x = 963 divide by 9 on both sides
x = 107
Solar energy generated 107 trillion BTUs. Wind energy generated 908 trillion BTUs.

If you did mean 52 trillion MORE than 8 times solar, then:
solar = s, wind = 52 + 8s, total = 1015 = s + 52 + 8s or:
9s + 52 = 1015
9s = 1015 - 52 = 963
s (solar) = 107
wind = 52 + 8(107) = 908
so...solar (107) + wind (908) = 1015
