the solutions of the equation x2 = 49 are ±7 because a quadratic equation has two zeros (unless discriminant = 0), including cases of complex zeros.
 
Consider the function y = √x; it IS a function because there's only one output for any input in its domain.
 
The solution of the equation y =√(x2) is y = |x| which can be written y = ±x.
