You can only add radicals that have the same number under the radical sign. This number is called the radicand.
The goal is to simplify each radical by rooting out the perfect square factors in hopes of common radicands:
√48 + √75 [since 48 = 16(3) and 75 = 25(3) ]
√(16·3) + √(25·3) ["root out" the 16 and 25 ]
4√3 + 5√3 [now the radicands are the same so we have like terms]
(4+5)√3
9√3
