How many liters of pure water must be added to 40 liters of a 30% alcohol solution to make a 20% alcohol solution?

30% alcohol is 70% water
20% alcohol is 80% water
w represents the amount of pure water
(0.70)(40) + w = (0.80)(40 + w)

When you solve for w, you should get 20 L, which is the same result as in the solution to your second posting of this problem (although obtained by a slightly different approach).
