Tony has 6 dollars in change in his car. Every time he drives to visit his grandma, he pays $1.25 in tolls. Write an equation for the amount of money that Tony has after passing through each toll. Complete the table of values for t=0, t=1 and t=4 and then graph the relationship between the number of toll booths and money Tony has.

Every time that Tony passes through a toll booth, it costs him $1.25, therefore one equation is:

 

amount of money at time t = amount of money at t-1 less $1.25 where amount of money at t=0  is $6.00

3        $2.25

4        $1.00

 

Since he only has $1.00 after four trips through the toll booth, he only has $1.00 left and cannot pass through any tolls booths because he does not have $1.25.
