Hi Donna,
I'd love to help you out, but I'm not sure what the question is. To say that "set w" is the set of letters in the word "washington" means that you have a collection of items (called a set), and this collection is named "w". The items in this collection are each individual letter in the word "washington" -- so, the set "w" has as its contents: "w", "a", "s", "h", "i", "n", "g", "t", "o", and "n". Note that there are two different items "n" in the set, because there are two letters "n" in "washington." Also note that the "w" in the set is a letter and an item of the set; it is in no way related to the fact that the set is named "w". Because of this, you may want to call the set something other than "w" in the problem to avoid extra confusion (maybe call the set "x" or something that doesn't occur elsewhere in the problem).
Is there something you are being asked to do with the set? I would be happy to help further if so. If not, I hope my explanation was useful for you!
Best,
Aaron
