I need help with a word problem in math

Sylvia teaches music to 63 students who are under 10 years of age. The students under 10 years of age make up 35% of all her music students. How many students does Sylvia teach music?

Work this as a proportion.  

 

n = total number of students

 

Then 63 is to n as 35 is to 100.

 

63/n = 35/100

 

n = (100/35)(63) = 180

 

Note that 63 is 35% of 180.
