Question

Confucius believed civil servants should be kind and benevolent (Ren), respect elders (Li), and have respect for obligations that they have to other family members (Xiao). Is my understanding of Confucianism correct?

Quite right Siddarth but also try to think of Confucianism as centering around familial duties.  The role of each person in the family is to preserve the harmony of the family by obeying strict guidelines of responsibilites and ranks.

 

Now the concept of Confucianism becoming a state philosophy is based on the realization that society is just a bigger version of family.
