Yield per tree??????????????

The fruit tree yield per tree in an orchard containing 60 trees is 183
pounds per tree each year. the yield decreases
by 2 pounds per tree for every additional tree planted. What is the
yield per tree that will maximize the yield for the entire orchard?

As Mark indicated below, you can solve this equation algebraically. However, since it is marked as a Calculus problem, they probably want you to take the first derivative of the yield equation that Mark provided, set it to zero, and solve for t. Once you have t, the "yield per tree" that maximized total yield is 183 - 2t.

In the study of parabolas, f(x) = ax2 + bx + c, the axis of symmetry is x = -b/2a. Hmmmm looks like the first derivative!
