Isolate the whole number and fractions, Therefore the whole Number is 5 and the fractions are 2/6 and 1/3
add fractions 2/6 + 1/3, the common denominator is 6 . Devide 6 by the denominator of the first fraction and mutiply by its nemerator that is ((6÷6) x 2)/6) = 2/6 , Devide 6 by the denominator of the second fraction and multiply by its numerator that is ((6÷3)x1)/6) = 2/6
Add the resulting two fractions (2/6)+(2/6) = 4/6 simplfy by dividing top and bottom by 2 you get 2/3. add whole number to fraction 5+(2/3) = 5 2/3 = 5.66.
Another method:
the frst fraction (2/6) can be simplified by dividing top and bottom by 2 to get (1/3)
Add the first fraction 1/3 to the second fraction 1/3 such that 1/3+1/3 = 2/3
Add the result of fraction addition to the whole number and the result would be 5+2/3 = 5 2/3 or 5.66
There are 2 ways to solve this:
1. The first way is to add the mixed number and fraction:
First, find a common denomimator, which would be 6. Now change 1/3 into an equivalent fraction by multiplying the numerator and denominator by 2 which gives us 2/6.
We now have 5 2/6 + 2/6 = 5 4/6.
The fraction can be simplified to 2/3 by dividing the numerator and denominator by 2.
So our answer is 5 2/3.
2. The second way is to convert the mixed number to an improper fraction and then add the proper fraction (1/3).
We can convert 5 2/6 into an improper fraction by multiplying the denominator by the whole number and then adding the numerator.
(6x5) + 2 = 30 + 2 = 32. So the improper fraction is 32/6.
We now have 32/6 + 1/3. Using the same method as in #1 above, 1/3 is changed to 2/6 so now our equation is
32/6 + 2/6
= 34/6.
34/6 = 6/6 + 6/6 + 6/6 + 6/6 +6/6 + 4/6
= 5 4/6
Again we simplify 4/6 to 2/3, so the answer is 5 2/3.
