I think the problem is:

 

2x-1 = 3

 

Add 1 to both sides of the equation

 

2x-1+1 = 3+1                    [-1+1=0]

 

2x = 4

 

Divide both sides by 2:

 

2x/2 = 4/2                         [2x/2 = x]

 

x = 2

 

Check:

2x - 1 = 3

2*(2) - 1 = 3                     [Plugged in x=2]

4 - 1 = 3

3 = 3                               CHECK!
