Hannah,
The original problem said " Identify the type of pattern. Then find the next three numbers in the pattern. 4,32,108,256,500"

The first task is to identify the type of pattern.  What this is asking is what is the relationship between the integers and the numbers given in the sequence. In order to do this you might make a graph of the numbers given versus the integers. Notice the the numbers in the sequence grow very quickly. So one guess is that the pattern is given by a(n)=bnc where b and c are constants and c>1. If we try a few b's and c's we find that if b=4 and c=3 then a(n)=4nand we can use this formula to calculate the sequence that was given
a(n)    n
4        1   a(1)=4*(1)3
16      2   a(2)=4*(2)3
108    3
256    4   a(4)=4*(4)3
500    5
846    6
1,372 7
2,048 8
As you can see having the formula a(n) allows you the reproduce the given sequence and calculate the next three numbers in the pattern.
Let me know if this is any clearer.
Regards
Jim
