They are only terms that can can be added, and the result of addition is the same term with coefficient be the algebraic Sum of the coefficients of individual terms.
Example:
3x - 2x = X -5y + 2y = -3Y
8 x^2 Y - 12 X^2 Y = - 4 X^2 Y
