Think about the sum of 1/2 + 1/4. In money that's 0.50 + 0.25 = 0.75, or 3/4 dollar.
1/2 + 1/4 = 3/4 because 1/2 can also be written 2/4, so the problem becomes 2/4 + 1/4 = 3/4
Try to do the same kind of thing with 1/3. Maybe you can change 1/3 into an equivalent fraction like we changed 1/2 into 2/4. Then you might be able to come up with an addition or subtraction problem that would give you an answer equivalent to 1/3.
