Exponent problem #1

   3                    4
_____   __    ______

 X - 2             X + 2

_________________

            7
       _______

         X -  4

I multiply the top 3 (x + 2) and 4 ( x - 2) which gives me 3x + 6 - 4x - 8 which equals -X - 2 over (x-2) (x + 2)

Now, how do I do the rest? Do i multiple - x -2 by x-4 over 7?

Thank you

I get 3x + 6 - 4x + 8 (from 3(x+2) - 4(x-2)

which equals - X + 14           x - 4

                    _______          ______

                      (x-2) (x+2)      7

The 7 and 14 cancel (14 to 2)

- ( x + 2)              (x - 4)
________      X     ______
(x + 2) (x-2)             1

the X +2 cancel out

I come up with

- x-4
_____

  x-2

The 7 and 14 don't cancel because the 14 is added not multiplied across the numerator.  The answer is

(14-x)(x-4)/(x+2)(x-2)  which I don't think you can simplify further

Now if the x-4 were x2-4, then x2-4 = (x+2)(x-2) and the answer would be (14-x)/7 = 2 - (1/7)x.

oops, left the 7 out ...

(14-x)(x-4)/7(x+2)(x-2)
