When you have a fraction in the denominator, such as:
(1/8)
------
(1/2)
You invert the fraction in the denominator and multiply:
(1/8) 1 2 2 1
------ = --- * --- = --- = ---
(1/2) 8 1 8 4
------ = --- * --- = --- = ---
(1/2) 8 1 8 4
So you need to invert the fraction 7/(x-4) and multiply. Also, the numerator should be 3x+6-4x+8 = -x+14 vice what you got 3x + 6 - 4x - 8 = -x-2.

The 7 and 14 don't cancel because the 14 is added not multiplied across the numerator. The answer is
(14-x)(x-4)/(x+2)(x-2) which I don't think you can simplify further
Now if the x-4 were x2-4, then x2-4 = (x+2)(x-2) and the answer would be (14-x)/7 = 2 - (1/7)x.

oops, left the 7 out ...
(14-x)(x-4)/7(x+2)(x-2)
(14-x)(x-4)/7(x+2)(x-2)
