Sarah Meeham blends coffee for Tasti-Delight. She needs to prepare 140 pounds of blended coffee beans selling for $4.16 per pound. She plans to do this by blending together a high-quality bean costing $4.75 per pound and a cheaper bean at $2.00 per pound. To the nearest pound, find how much high-quality coffee bean and how much cheaper coffee bean she should blend.

To sell 140 lb of blended coffee beans at $4.16/lb, the total cost will be $582.40

 

If we let x = the number of lb. of high quality beans, then (140 - x) = the number of lb. of cheaper beans

 

We can form the following equation:

 

4.75x + 2(140 - x) = 582.4

4.75x + 280 - 2x = 582.4

2.75x + 280 = 582.4

2.75x = 302.4

x = 110

 

Sarah should blend 110 lb of the high quality bean and 140 - 110 = 30 lb of the cheaper bean
