of water. What was the water output rate for each sprinkler if the sum of the two rates was

Let r = the rate of the Parker Family's sprinkler.  The rate of the Hayes' sprinkler then is 40 - r.

 

40r + 25(40-r) = 1225

 

Solve for r.  Once you have r (The Parker's rate), the Hayes' rate is 40 - r.
