The median is the middle number in a data set ordered from smallest to largest. If there are an odd number of values in the data set, then the median will be on of the values in the data set. For example, in the 5 value data set:
3, 4, 5, 8, 9
The middle number is 5 and it is the median. However, if you have an even number of values in the data set, then there is no middle number:
3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9
The median lies between 5 and 6. In fact, the median is (5+6)/2 = 5.5, which is not one of the values in the data set.
