Which number has the smaller number? -6 or -17? Explain your answer

If the question is asking which of -6 or -17 is smaller, and what "smaller" means is "furthest left on the number line," than the answer is -17.  -6 is left of 0 on the number line, but only 6 units away from 0, and -17 is 17 units left of 0 - or a full 11 units further left of 0 than -6 is.  I may not be understanding the question correctly, but I believe this is the answer they are looking for!
