traffic signs are regulated by the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). The perimeter of a rectangular traffic sign is 7474 inches. Also, its length is 77 inches longer than its width. Find the dimensions of this sign.

perimeter = 2L + 2W for a rectangle, where L is the length and W is the width.

 

Let x = width and x + 77 = length

 

2x + 2(x + 77) = 7474

4x + 154 = 7474

4x = 7320

x = 1830

 

The dimensions are 1907 x 1830 inches
