Two trains started from the same station at the same time and traveled in opposite directions. After traveling 4 hours, they were 480 miles apart. The rate of the fastest train exceeded the rate of the slow train by 10 mph. Find the rate of each train.

 speed of slow train=x

so
speed of fast train =x+10

time taken by both train = 4hrs

 

distance covered by slow train = rate * time = x* 4=4x

distance covered by fast train = rate * time =( x+10)* 4=4x +40

 

4x+4x+40=480

8x=440

x=55

rate of slow train =55m/hr

rate o ffast train =55+10=65m/hr
