The slow train moves at y mph
The fast train moves at (y+10) mph
After 4 hours the slow train travels 4y miles
After 4 hours the fast train travels 4(y+10) miles
Now total distance traveled by the trains combined is 4y + 4(y+10) miles
we know this distance is equal to 480 miles
Therefore, 4y + 4(y + 10) = 480
or 4y + 4y + 40 = 480
or 8y = 480 - 40
or 8y = 440
or y = 55
Therefore, the slow train travels at 55 mph and the fast train at (55 + 10 =) 65 mph
