At your kid's age, I hated math, too. Not any more!
The area of 56 square blocks, assuming you're talking about city blocks, is just that: 56 square blocks. (Unless you know how long a block is, that's as far as you can take it.)
As for the perimeter, there is more than one possibility. If your 56 square block area is 8 x 7 blocks, then your perimeter will be 2*8 + 2*7, or 30 blocks.
But there are other factor pairs that give you 56:
1*56, 2*28, 4*14
Each of which will give you a veeerrry different perimeter! :-)
