The easiest way to do these problems is the way you multiply numbers without a calculator.

 

To multiply  43 x 12    you would stack them

 

   43

x 12     Then multiply 2x3  then 2 x 4   then 1 x 3  then 1 x 4   and add the results in columns

 

Do your problem one pair at a time.

 

2X + 1

x - 3           becomes  -3(1) + -3(2x) + (x)(1) + x(2x)   or   2x² -5x -3 

 

Now multiply that answer by the last factor  (x-2)

 

2x² -5x -3

    x - 2      becomes  -2(-3) + (-2)(-5x) + (-2)(-2x²) + x(-3) + (x)(-5x) + (x)(2x²)

 

or +6 +10x +4x² -3x -5x² + 2x³

If f(x) = (2x+1)(x-3)(x-2) is in factored form, what is f(x) in standard form?

 

In Standard Form there are no parenthesis, like terms are collected into one term each, and the terms are ordered in decreasing degree (exponent).

 

Multiply two factors together using the Distributive Property, then multiply the result by the third factor. Then "pretty it up" to conform to previous paragraph.
