It depends on what you have

 

for instance, if you have  y = x + 6

 

you will choose values from negative infinity to positive infinity

 

I am saying you may let x = -1, x= 0, x= 3, x = 5, and so on

 

y =6 if x = 0

y = 5 if x = -1

y =9 if x = 3

 

You will then use these values in your graph to get the line of the equation
