What we need to find is 1/5 of 440 first. So 440 divided by 5 = 88. That is the important amount because that represents the amount of "other items". Then it asks for 25 percent of that, which is 1/4. So we divide 88 by 4 and get 22. That is how many baseball caps were sold.

Once you know that, you figure out what percentage that is of 440 (the total) by dividing the part by the total to get a percentage. 22/440 = 1/20 = ? %

(Don't let words in a problem confuse you, just look at what the problem is actually asking for) Good Luck!!

Hi there,

I will like to guide you through and let you provide answer by yourself because academic rules.

4/5 = 0.8 which is 80% of the 440

Take that 80% of the 440 (i.e. 440 * 0.8 = ) to get ?

You can get this by 80/100 * 440 =

Let ' us find the number of other items sold by finding the difference between

440 - ? =

This means 88 is the number of other item sold. But we were told that only 25% of this total were baseball caps

You know that 25% = 25/100 = 0.25

And 0.25 is the same as 1/4, so 1/4 of 88 = 88/4 =

Hence, the number of baseball caps sold is ?.

Hope this help. Give yourself more practical test like this to master this concept.

This problem needs to be taken in two steps. First, let's look at the information we have about sweatshirts.

440 total items

4/5 (80%) sweatshirts

Next, we can use that information to find out how many sweatshirts were sold, and how many remaining unidentified items were sold.

440 * .8 = 352 sweatshirts sold.

440 - 352 = 88 remaining items

Great. Now we have information about unidentified remaining items, and the percentage of those that are caps.

88 remaining items

25% of remaining items are baseball caps

88 * .25 = 22 baseball caps

Hey, look! There we go! When you take information step by step, it makes everything way easier. I hope this was helpful!

4/5 = 0.8 in decimal

(0.8)*440 = 352 sweatshirts sold

Second, let's figure out out how many "other items" were sold

440 total items - 352 sweatshirts = 88 other items sold

Third, let's calculate how many caps were sold. We know that 25% of the other items were baseball caps.

Convert 25% to decimal = 0.25

(0.25)*88 = 22 baseball caps sold

Finally, to find what percentage 22 baseball caps is to the 440 total items sold, set up a proportion:

22 x%

---- = ------ the ratio of 22 to 440 is the same as x% is to 100%

440 100%

(22*100)/440 = x%

Solve for x

440 * 4/5 = 352 / Sweatshirt

440 -352 = 88 / Total other items

%25 * 88 = 22 Baseball Caps sold.

22/ 440 = 5 % / percentage of total baseball cap sold.

Kieshara, a percent is always a ratio or

the # of items we're interested in

---------------------------------------

the total # of items we're taking them from

The question gives us 440 items sold and asks for the percentage of baseball caps sold. So we need to divide the number of baseball hats by 440.

The question says 4/5 of the total number of items sold were sweatshirts or (4/5) x 440 = 4 x 88 = 352 sweatshirts. Thus the numer of hats has to be less than 440-352=88. 88 is the number of other items sold. The problem tells us that 25% of the other items sold were hats or 88 x 0.25 = 22 hats, so the ratio the question asks for is 22 hats / 440 items sold.

22/440 = 1/20 = 0.05 = 5%
