I will ignore the title (and its misspelled 'esiest') and turn my attention to this part:
how do I solve for the sum after I squared the b and a.
My guess is that you are dealing with something like c2 = a2 + b2, i.e. Pythagorean theorem for right triangles.
If you know values of a and b, each is squared, individually, and these are then summed. This gives you c squared.
A calculator will be able to take the square root of that number, thus providing the value of c.
If c2 happens to be a perfect square, and if you have taken the time to learn various perfect squares (4, 9, 16, 25, 36, 49, 64, 81, 100, 121, 144, 169), THEN you can instantly know their square roots (2, 3, 4, ... , 13).

If calculators are prohibited, then when a desired square root is not an integer, just give the exact answer, e.g. √5 or the like.
