A basketball player scored 18 times during one game. SheShe scored a total of 29 points, two for each two-point shot and one for each free throw. How many two-point shots did sheshe make? How many free throws?

Let's label the two-point shots she got as "x" and the free throws as "y."

 

We don't know how many times she scored each yet, but the number of times total = 18

                                        => x + y = 18 => y = 18 - x

 

So, x (2) + (18 - x) • 1 = 29 points => 2x + 18 - x = 29 => x = 11

 

∴ There were 11 two-point shots and 7 free throws.
