Although you don't have the directions posted, I am assuming that you need to solve this equation for x.
If that were the case, x - 7 > -5 would be solved like this:
X is YOU and 7 is your brother. You would like to be alone, but you are connected to your brother. In order to send him to his room, you must sever the connection.
X is YOU and 7 is your brother. You would like to be alone, but you are connected to your brother. In order to send him to his room, you must sever the connection.
He is connected to you by SUBTRACTION. To sever the connection, we must undo it with ADDITION.
x - 7 + 7 > -5 + 7 (since whatever you do to one side you must also do to the other)
Now Simplify.
x (- 7 + 7) > (-5 + 7)
-7 + 7 = 0, which leaves x alone.
- 5 + 7 is the same as 7-5 (commutative property of addition), which leaves 2.
Therefore:
x > 2
