Let the present age of Tina be x. Then Sherry is x-4 years old.
In two years, they will get two years older, so we can write
(x+2) + (x-4+2) = 40 (the first parenthesis stands for Tina's and the second one stands for Sherry's age in two years, respectively).
x+2+x-2 = 40
2x = 40
x = 20 Tina's age
20-4 = 16 Sherry's age
