c. At a craft store, fabric comes in bolts that are a fixed number of inches wide.
You can only buy fabric by the whole yard. If each bolt is 48 in. wide, what is the least amount of each color that you need to buy? Explain.

Using the design below, you plan to make a rectangular wall hanging to decorate your
bedroom. Th e green rectangle is 16 ft by 10 ft, the blue square is 7 ft by 7 ft, the orange
triangles have a height of 1.73 ft and a side length of 2 ft, and the yellow circle has a
diameter of 3 ft. You plan to glue the pieces together and then outline each piece with
black cord.

"green rectangle is 16 ft by 10 ft"  
   requires 4 strips of 4 ft (that is, 48 in) by 12 ft  [note 12 ft is 4 whole yards]
          [note: no overlap for sewing
     4 * 4 yds = 16 yards

"blue square is 7 ft by 7 ft"
    requires 2 strips of 4 ft by 2 yds

     2 * 2 yds = 4 yards

 

"orange triangles have a height of 1.73 ft and a side length of 2 ft"

     requires 1 strip of 4 ft by 1 yd 

   [be careful:  multiple triangles may be placed in opposite directions to save space!]

     1 * 1 yds = 1 yard for each triangle

 

"yellow circle has a diameter of 3 ft"

     requires 1 strip of 4 ft by 1 yd

      1 * 1 yd = 1 yard

 

"You plan to glue the pieces together and then outline each piece with
black cord."  This requires the picture and a width of the "outline."  When the earlier values exactly meet the requirements, you may have to buy another yard or two of cloth or else turn the pattern 90° to try to fit in the other direction.  Also, if the black cloth acts as a backing to the whole project, calculate the entire size.
