I am taking your request for a "situation" is that you want a word problem such as "The rise over run of a hiking hill is 2 and a hiking trail starts 5 feet above the base of the hill (origin). Let Y equal the vertical height in feet of the hikers above the base and X equal the horizontal distance in feet of the hikers from the base. What linear equation models this situation? Y = 2x + 5

Well, the trail my brother made me hike in Colorado had to be close. But yes, I agree, my example was on the extreme side.
