What is a(x + b) < c for x?

a(x + b) < c

 

To isolate x:

a(x + b) < c

ax + ab < c                [distribute]

ax < c - ab          [subtract +ab from both sides retains the sense of the inequality]

x < (c-ab)/a        [divide both sides by +a retains the sense of the inequality]

 

You could also write this as:

 x < c/a - b

Divide both sides of the inequality by a.

 

x + b > c / a

 

 

Subtract b to both sides of the inequality.

 

x > (c / a) - b
