in a circuit, the power dissipated by one resistor is: P₁=V₁²/R. The power dissipated by another resistor is:P₂=V₂²/R. 

Factor the expression P₁-P₂ that represents the difference in power dissipated by the two resistors.

P₁ - P₂ = (V₁² - V₂²) / R

 

 

The numerator is a difference of perfect squares.

 

          = [(V₁ - V₂)(V₁ + V₂)] / R
