solve the equation using quadratic formula 2x2-4x-16

2x² - 4x - 16 = 0

 

Divide through by 2 to simplify it a little.

 

x² - 2x - 8 = 0

 

x = {2 ± √[4 - 4(-8)]} / 2 = (2 ± 6) / 2 = 1 ± 3

 

x = 4, -2
