First, label the unknown quantities:
Let L be the Length of the rectangular court
Let W be the width of the court
Let P be the perimeter of the court
Next, write formulas involving those quantities:
(Perimeter: walk down one long side, and write down L feet,
then walk next to the short side, and write down W,
then walk back up the other long side, write down L,
finally, walk alongthe other short side, and write down W.
Total perimeter is L + W + L + W. once you gather similar terms, you get:)
P = 2L + 2W
and you have another formula involving P:
P = 3W - 210
since both formulas are equal to P, set them equal to each other:
2L + 2W = 3W - 310: Simplify this
2L = 1W - 310
while we don’t know enough to arrive at a number, we can see how they’re related:
2L = W - 310
L = W/2 - 310/2 = W/2 - 65
or
W = - 310 - 2L
