Why does adding 10% and 5% of the same number together yield a different result that adding 15% of that number?

This is a markup question. I am trying to add 10% overhead and 5% profit to a construction job and get different results and can not understand why?

You can do it! I'll show you how.

Gus C.

The dilemma is that:

We calculate margins by division. X/.95 = 5% margin,  x.90 = 10% margin
Example:
10,000 5% OH = 526.32
10,000 10% profit = 1111.12
Total = 11,637.44

However:
10,000 15% OH & P = 11,764.71

Where did the $ extra 127.27 come from. I based both calculations on the original 10,000?????
