Want you want to look at the date set. You need to find the mean or the average, or at least where all the data is cluster together. I am going to assume the data is a standard normal distribution as in a bell shape curve. If the data is not cluster together you are going to have to use statistics. At this point you can look at the data and see the numbers that are at the tails. Assuming you want to just look at the data and get an idea, here is an example. The data set is 1,4,5,6,10 : the average or mean 5.2, we can see that 1 and 10 are far away from the average at 5.2 and that 4,5,6 are close to the center of 5.2. if the data is 3,4,5,6,7, you cannot determine the outliers without using statistics. These are simple example, it should be obvious what the outliers on the on the first set, the second set may not have any outliers you have to run the statistics. If you are talking about inventory control or production chart it will be a little different. Good luck.
