The Intercept Form of a Linear Equation is:

 

x/a + y/b = 1

 

It's easy to get if you have Standard Form:

 

Ax + By = C

 

Divide by C:

 

x/(C/A) + y/(C/B) = 1

          To graph the first example you put one point at 4 on the x-axis ( the horizontal line ) and place the other point at 5 on the y-axis ( the vertical line ) then you draw a line that runs through each point. You follow the same method for the 2nd example.

 

For the equation -3x-6y=12 you need to determine the x and y intercepts in order to be able to graph your line.

 

To determine the x intercept you solve the equation as if y = 0

 

-3x-6(0)=12 -3x=12 -3x/-3 = 12/-3  x = -4  so your x intercept is -4

 

To determine the y intercept solve the equation as if x = 0

-3(0)-6y =12 -6y =12 -6y/-6 = 12/-6 y= -2 so your y intercept = -2

      -3x -6Y =12

 

       Y intercept:

 

     -3( 0 ) - 6 y = 12    Y = -2     ( 0. -2 )  Y intercept/

 

       -3( X ) - 6 (0) = 12    X = -4   ( -4 , 0 )
